Luis Alvarez - A Profile of the Famous Scientist
Luis Alvarez - A Profile of the Famous Scientist Name: Luis Alvarez Born/Died: 1911-1988 Nationality: American (with antecedents in Spain and Cuba) About Luis Alvarez Luis Alvarez is a good example of how an amateur can have a profound impact on the world of paleontology. We put the word amateur is in quotation marks because, before he turned his attention to the extinction of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago, Alvarez was a highly accomplished physicist (in fact, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1968 for his discovery of the resonance states of fundamental particles). He was also a lifelong inventor, and was responsible for (among other things) the Synchrotron, one of the first particle accelerators used to probe the ultimate constituents of matter. Alvarez was also involved in the later stages of the Manhattan Project, which yielded the nuclear bombs dropped on Japan at the end of World War II. In paleontology circles, though, Alvarez is best known for his late 1970s investigation (conducted with his geologist son, Walter) into the K/T Extinction, the then-mysterious event 65 million years ago that killed the dinosaurs, as well as their pterosaur and marine reptile cousins.à Alvarezs workingà theory, inspired by his discoveryà of a clay boundary in Italy separating geologic strata from the Mesozoic and Cenozoic Eras, was that the impact of a large comet or meteor threw up billions of tons of dust, which circled around the globe, blotted out the sun, and caused global temperatures to plunge andà the earthââ¬â¢s vegetation to wither, with the result that first plant-eating and then meat-eating dinosaurs starved and froze to death. Alvarezs theory, published in 1980,à was treated with intense skepticism for a full decade, but was finally accepted by the majority of scientists after scattered iridium deposits in the vicinity of the Chicxulub meteor crater (in present-day Mexico) could be traced to the impact of a large interstellar object. (Theà rare element iridium is more common deeper in the earth than on the surface, and could only have been scattered in the patterns detectedà by a tremendous astronomical impact.) à Still, the widespread acceptance of this theoryà hasnt prevented scientists from pointing to ancillary causes for the extinction of the dinosaurs, the most likely candidate being the volcanic eruptions triggered when the Indian subcontinent slammed into the underside of Asia at the end of the Cretaceous period.

Construction Law Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words - 2
Construction Law - Essay Example Similarly, the manner in which the work is managed on site with adequate provisions for maintaining safety at heights or when dealing with heavy or hazardous substances, is largely the responsibility of the supply side of construction services. Construction work involves building, renovating or repairing buildings, both for residential and commercial purposes. Construction poses risks to workers in the dangers that exist on the site, especially where demolitions or renovations are being carried out. The use of defective materials or inadequate implementation of safety measures on construction sites could further aggravate the problem, especially if designers have created high rises and building structures that are complicated to execute during the construction process. Construction also poses risks to workers by way of ill health arising out of hard physical labor or being crushed or wounded through the use of heavy building materials. There is increased scope for accidents that could arise on such sites, especially since workers may be unaware of safety risks. The construction industry largely employs unskilled, male laborers who are not educated enough to accurately gauge risks that could arise in construction sites, thereby posing risks to their safety and well being. Moreover, since laborers are largely transitory, contractual labor, employers may not be bound to provide them with all the benefits that are laid out in employment, including the right against unfair dismissal and the provision of health and medical benefits. Current laws also do not make adequate provision for unusual working conditions such as atypical contracts where a worker may be hired as and when required and thus finds it difficult to prove continuity of service for purposes of claims against unfair dismissal.2 Moreover, in cases where a worker may be hired by an employer/client using the intermediary services of an agency, such

Paul Allen and Bill Gates founded Microsoft Company on April 4, 1945.à Since then, Microsoft Corporation has grown to be the worldââ¬â¢s largest software manufacturer by revenue. Notably, Microsoft Corporation is one of the most valuable companies in the world. Microsoft was established to manufacture and sell the Altair 8800 BASIC interpreters. In the mid-1980s, this company ventured into selling personal computers operating systems, particularly the MS-DOS. This was followed by Microsoft Windows operating systems. In the year 1986, Microsoft initiated public offering that led to the rise in its share prices. Since the early 1990s, Microsoft Corporation has increasingly diver sified into numerous operating system markets that have made it acquire numerous corporates. For instance, in May 2011, it acquired Skype Technologies at the value of $8.5 billion, and Skype has been Microsoftââ¬â¢s largest acquisition since its advent. Notably, Microsoftââ¬â¢s key business process is remarkably candid in that it develops software then distributed to users who purchase either directly from the Microsoft Corporation or through the company's outlet agencies or companies that have rights to sell through them.... Promoting Wellness and Resilience Essay Example for Free
Promoting Wellness and Resilience Essay This paper deals with promoting wellness and resilience for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). First, a model of wellness and resiliency is presented. Then, recommended intervention activities that promote resilience and wellness are discussed. Lastly, prevention and education activities are proposed. Wellness and Resiliency Model Studies on wellness and resilience models among individuals with IDD appear non-existent and very few have been written about counseling methodology. Most focus on a cognitive-behavioral approach to psychotherapy (CBT). Therefore, a paradigm must be created that combines CBT and an evidence-based model of wellness. Myers, Sweeney, and Witmer (2000) define wellness as ââ¬Å"a way of life oriented toward optimal health and well-being, in which body, mind, and spirit are integrated by the individual to live life more fully within the human and natural community. Ideally, it is the optimum state of health and well-being that each individual is capable of achievingâ⬠(p. 252). ââ¬Å"Resilience refers to positive adaptation, or the ability to maintain or regain mental health, despite experiencing adversityâ⬠(Herrman, Stewart, Diaz-Granados, Berger, Jackson, Yuan, 2011, p. 259). Myers and Sweeney (2005) created a model of wellness called The Indivisible Self which is based on Adlerian principles. This model delineates five areas of wellness: physical, essential, social, coping, and creative. Physical well-being is further divided into two areas: exercise and nutrition. Essential wellness is broken down into four components: spirituality, self-care, gender identity, and cultural identity. Social felicity is divided into two parts: friendship and love. Coping is divided into four aspects: realistic beliefs, stress management, self-worth, and leisure. Creative fitness is broken down into five elements: thinking, emotion, control, positive humor, and work (Myers and Sweeney, 2005). Recommended Intervention Activities That Promote Resilience and Wellness Asà the IDD population tends to be of lower socioeconomic status (as adults), placed in residential facilities, and highly medicated, physical health is a vital component of overall wellness. Physical fitness can be maintained through exercise programs. A community-based program described by Lante, Walkley, Gamble, and Vassos (2011) provided health and psychosocial benefits to participants. In the area of essential wellness , spirituality plays an important part in the lives of most. IDD individuals should be allowed to attend worship services or participate in other activities cultivating the spiritual nature. Watts (2011) proposes utilization of Special Religious Education for People with a Developmental Disability (SPRED), defined as ââ¬Å"â⬠¦symbolic catechesis where formal instruction is supplemented or completely replaced by visual, aural, sensory, and physical stimuli (p. 237). In the area of self-care, individuals can be taught tasks to their fullest level of independence. Gender identity can be explored through modified sex-education curriculums exemplified by The Facts of Lifeand More by Walker-Hirsch (lesliewalker-hirsch.com, 2014). Social well-being is a necessary component of wellness among those with IDD. Friendship and love are very possible and should be encouraged. Community groups, such as The Gathering Place and Pathfinders, provide a venue and activities for the population (welcometowesley.com, 2014; gracenc.org, 2014). Dating sites such as Special Bridge provide access for individuals with IDD a chance to meet and date others with IDD (specialbridge.com). CBT can be utilized to help disabled individuals in the area of coping. Irrational beliefs can be explored and replaced with more realistic views. Stress management techniques can be taught. Self-worth can be explored and improved (Lee, 2004). Leisure skills and interests can be explored and improved upon through systematic testing and development (Kreiner and Flexer, 2009). Creative fitness can be cultivated through activities that involve thinking, particularly critical thinking. Handling emotions and controlling behavior can be taught via dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) (Rizvi, Steffel, and Carson-Wong, 2013). Work needs can be met through sheltered, supported, and/or competitive employment. In North Carolina, the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation provides services and referrals to service providers (ncdhhs.gov/dvrs, 2014). Proposed Prevention and Education Activities Education and prevention can focus on training individuals, families, caretakers, and facility staff. If those who are in contact with the population everyday can be educated as much as possible, the level of wellness and resilience in persons with IDD should increase. IDD clients can learn about healthy eating and exercise through objective plans adjusted for functioning level. For instance, individuals with autism can read a social story (The Gray Center, 2014). Individuals, families and staff can be trained on proper nutrition by registered dietitians who can develop meal plans (American Dietetic Association, 2009). The importance of gender and sex education, spirituality, and cultural identity can be taught to those working with people with IDD. Gender and cultural identity and sex education can be taught to individuals with IDD through modified curriculums or incidental learning. Social skills, coping mechanisms, and creative pursuits can be taught to individuals. Families and facilities can learn what coping mechanisms are effective for clientele. Identified Strategies to Promote Community Resources Families in particular can be directed to community resources. Many resources exist for individuals with IDD. Brochures, information about service providers, and government resources can be given to families and higher-functioning individuals. Providing links to websites for organizations such as The Arc and managed care organizations such as Coastal Care can be a good starting place (thearc.org, 2014; coastalcarenc.org, 2014). Jimi Hendrix :: essays research papers
Jimi Hendrix Jimi Hendrix, possibly the greatest guitarist in rock history changed the sound of rock. In 1967 The Jimi Hendrix Experience rocked the nation with their first album Are You Experienced?. Hendrix had a short life because of drugs in 1970 when he was only 27 years old. In a few years, rock and roll changed a lot and Jimiââ¬â¢s guitar playing was a big influence. Jimi Hendrix was born in Seattle Washington on November 27, 1942. When he was just a kid he would play along with his R&B records whenever he could. He didnââ¬â¢t always like to play music though, he always had wanted to be in the army. In the late 1950ââ¬â¢s Jimi joined the 101st airborne division, but he had a back injury doing a jump and got a medical discharge. Thatââ¬â¢s when he decided to have a musical career. The Monkees heard them and liked them, and asked them to tour with them. But not many Monkees fans liked his lyrics and his style, so they kicked him off the tour. Command Philosophy Essay
1. Mission: I am honored to serve as the Commander of this vital and highly essential unit. The task of rapidly responding to and supporting missions worldwide requires highly specialized and trained Soldiers. Units who provide this asset successfully manage an array of challenges. These challenges range from maintaining an ability to rapidly deploy, staying current with the latest systems and technologies, sustaining Unit capability to timely, effectively, and competently meet geographically scattered logistical requirements, to recruiting and retaining the best qualified Logistics Officers and NCOs. My command philosophy is therefore to accomplish this mission by focusing on what is important; readiness, Soldier support, customer support, relevance and responsiveness. 2. Readiness: In order to effectively perform our mission we must be able to mobilize in a timely manner. As the Commander, My first priority is to make sure the unit is properly prepared and ready to join the fight. This includes unit readiness, equipment readiness, strong mentorship programs, relevant training, and vital family support programs. 3. Soldier Support: Soldier support is parallel to unit readiness. In taking care of our Soldiers, we must promote the Army values of loyalty, courage, selfless service, duty, honor, respect, and integrity. We owe our Soldiers an environment that promotes safety, physical fitness, equal opportunity, professional development and free from harassment. Personal accountability is a must. I expect every member of this unit to serve with the highest ethical and moral standards. I have a work hard, play hard mentality. I expect training to be significant and I expect Soldiers to have the weekends and holidays off. 4. Customer Support: Our ability to provide customer service keeps us in business. Therefore, everyone should be conscious of the service we provide. Do it legally and professionally. Know each otherââ¬â¢s duties. No one person can be responsible for anything. In a perfect world, requirements would come down 90-60 days in advance. In reality, it doesnââ¬â¢t usually occur this way. We need to adapt and overcome. Strive to develop yourselves, your subordinates and your customers. We need to be responsive to the needs of our customers to viable. We need to educate and be proactive to be vital. 5. Relevance: Our goal should always be to provide the highest-quality, technical and tactical logistical support in the world. We must be able to manage change to effectively meet constantly evolving mission requirements from various resources and customers. To accomplish this task, we must seek positions with greater leadership responsibility within this organization and in future assignments. We must continue to recruit and retain the highest quality officers and NCOs who have excellent technical and operational skills, and who possess strong leadership traits in order to ensure our mission success in the future. 6. Responsiveness: We must lead by example. I expect all leaders within this organization to serve as role models, mentors and facilitators. I expect all leaders to be competent, fair, consistent, and ethically sound. I expect all leaders to teach, coach, mentor and motivate. I expect all leaders to actively participate in the planning, execution, and monitoring of unit activities. 7. Conclusion: As the Commander, I will do everything within my power to accomplish these tasks, enable mission success and help each of you achieve your military professional goals.

Analysis of Beyond Budgeting by Jeremy Hope
In the book ââ¬Å"Beyond Budgeting,â⬠author Jeremy Hope gave an altogether different conceptualization of the significance of budgeting on effective management. In it, he emphasized the need for better and well-thought out budgeting plans in order not to sacrifice the management decisions and ultimately, the efficient performance of a company or organization. The author aimed to create a strong argument illustrating this objective-that is, the relationship of budgeting with management-and successfully achieved this by centering his attention to the rudimentary, yet essential, details of budgeting in a more comprehensible manner. The book, in effect, was organized into three parts: firstly, an analysis of budgeting; secondly, on management; and finally, the role that budgeting plays on effective management. One of the revolutionary ways in which budgeting was transformed in the book was by assigning the term ââ¬Å"performance management process,â⬠which connotes a more interactive and holistic approach to budgeting. Thus, by changing the terminology commonly known as ââ¬Å"budgetingâ⬠for ââ¬Å"performance management process,â⬠budgeting has ceased being a financial process and concept. Another objective that the change in terminology achieved was that it was able to weaken, if not altogether eliminate, the negative associations given to budgeting, such as its being ââ¬Å"too cumbersome and expensive,â⬠ââ¬Ënot meeting the needs of either executives or operating managers,' and the propensity for budgeting to become unrealistic and ââ¬Å"unacceptableâ⬠for the organization's or company's actual operations. The field of management is strongly affected by budgeting, according to Hope. He cites instances wherein budgets become ââ¬Å"fixed performance contracts,â⬠which need to be accomplished without much thought about its eventual effects on the company's performance. Indeed, the author elucidated his point clearly when he stated that ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ budgets have since been hijacked by a generation of financial engineers that have used them as remote control devices to ââ¬Ëmanage by the numbers'. â⬠In this statement, Hope expresses his disapproval on the seemingly simplistic and generalized manner in which budgeting is accomplished nowadays. Evidently, budgeting has become computerized, losing the ââ¬Å"human elementâ⬠that makes it more logical and in touch with the organization/company's operations and performance. A reinstatement of the active involvement of managers and executives in budgeting is need, the author asserted, in order to eliminate problems such as ââ¬Ëfailing to address current competitive imperatives' and incompatibility of the budget with the organization's daily operations. It was through the ââ¬Å"beyond budgetingâ⬠technique that Hope proposed the merging of budgeting and management into ââ¬Å"performance management process. â⬠This process will then become the new method where financial planning would become more ââ¬Å"adaptiveâ⬠and ââ¬Å"decentralizedâ⬠-that is, planning will come not only from the managers and executives, but also from the members of the organization themselves, who experience the daily problems of the company/organization. This ââ¬Å"adaptive processâ⬠involves targets, rewards, plans, resources, coordination, and controls as its key elements towards creating a more efficient, realistic, and feasible financial planning. Moreover, ââ¬Å"beyond budgetingâ⬠budgeting actually means a conscientious effort to put into the plan a holistic account of the company/organization's needs, based from its technology and members/employees.

The eNotes Blog Sanitizing The Giver
Sanitizing The Giver On August 11, 2014, thousands of teens and their parents eagerly purchased tickets for the long-awaited film adaptation of Lois Lowrys 1994 Newbery Award-winning novel The Giver.à My teenaged son read it in junior high and loved it. I loved it too. Like Madelyn LEngles A Wrinkle in Time, Lowrys The Giver has a subterranean angst that readers can feel bubbling under their fingertips as pages are turned, a sense that no matter how calm this world is on the outside, something is irreparably wrong. Everyone complains when a beloved novel is turned into a film. This may be especially true of science fiction works, asà entirely new worlds depend on an individuals imagination formed from an authors words. When one person, a director, substitutes his own vision for that of countless personal interpretations, tempers flare. While most moviegoers understand the necessity of divergences from the original text, other alterations are harder to accept. For me, one of the first hmmmmmmmmmmmm moments in the film comes when Jonas is clearly not twelve (initially, eleven), as he is in the novel. He seems to be seventeen or eighteen.à In a novel/film about censorship, this made my Spidey-senses quiver. Oneà oft-repeated charges leveled againstà The Giver is that its protagonist, and presumably, its audience, are too young for the novels challenging themes.à For example, [i]n 1994, The Giver was temporarily banned from classes by the Bonita Unified School District in LaVerne and San Dimas, California because four parents complained that violent and sexual passages were inappropriate for children. The following year, a parent in Franklin County, Kansas, challenged the book on the grounds that it is ââ¬Å"concerned with murder, suicide, and the degradation of motherhood and adolescence.â⬠The book was then removed from elementary libraries, but remained available to the teachers in the county.à Capitulate and make the c haracter older? DONE! Another element that was present in the film but of much more importance in the novel concerns bicycles. During the Ceremony, the Nines are presented with their bicycles, futuristic looking gizmos that will make younger audience members ooh-and-ahh. But thats all we get about the bikes in the movie. In the novel, bicycles are much more meaningful. It doesnt take a literature professor to recognize that bicycles equal a modicum of freedom and independence. That is not what is most important here, however. What should have been addressed is Jonass desire to teach Lily, his little sister, to ride before she is legally allowed (Jonas had been thinking already about teaching Lily Chapter 2).à This willingness to break rules offers some insight into his character.à And (spoiler alert!) when Jonas escapes from the Community with Gabe, he does so on a bicycle. There are other differences. There is a mark that a person must have on his or her wrist to become a Receiver; this is not a part of the novelannoying but acceptable. Additionally, Asher and Fiona have different jobs. Asher has been upgraded to Drone Pilot, a profession not possible in 1993. Okay, fine.à For her part, Fiona is a Nurturer in the film while in the novel she is a Caregiver for the elderly. Sure. Shrug. The role of Chief Elder, seems to have been expanded to justify what I presume to have been the enormous paycheck to get Meryl Streep to appear in this flick (in the novel, the Chief Elder is only involved in the Ceremonythats it.)à Jeff Bridges is basically The Dude in a nicer easy chair (was there a rug? Dude I hope so.)à Minor, liveable directorial choices. What I did not like was the sanitized ending. After Jonas makes the terrifying decision to rescue Gabe and leave behind the entire world he knows and loves, Lowry offers no guarantee that gray dystopia has been replaced by colorful utopia. In the novel, Gabe and Jonas travel for days, cold, hungry, exhausted, but they finally reach the top of the hill.à Filled with happiness, the pair glide toward what Jonas hopes is the new community. As he and Gabe descend, Jonas feels pangs of regret and thinks he may hear music coming from his old home: But perhaps it was only an echo. In short, although the reader thinks all may be well, there is no guarantee. In the film, as Jonas and Gabe speed downhill, the camera pulls back to show the old Community coming alive with color, and presumably, happiness, all memory restored. If this is the case, why wouldnt Jonas go home? Why not turn around and go back? Dont think about it too much, the film suggests. Happy ending achieved.

Mandatin Nurse-Patient Ratios - Essay Example It is where people converge with their lawmakers and meet with the team of legislators and the different committees. This is aslo where they give their testimonies and hearings. Getting the legislative place comes prior to providing change in policy (Abood, 2007 p.21). The nurses should understand the arena for legislation of the state and the federal levels to make their issues get known. 2) Understanding the legislative process steps This is the procedure that creates recommendations, makes and finally sources programs of health, and stages out other strategy and policy domains with healthy policy (Abood, 2007). After a problem becomes an agenda of the public, a bill should be provided, allocated to a panel, strategies organized, and activity of the panel takes the bill to the management before it is taken to any sitting. Each scenario has a similar legal procedure to authoritatively make policy options (Abood, 2007 p.21). Using the strategy, the nurses by understanding the legisla tive process steps can formulate bills that can be presented to their legislatures at the state and the federal levels for their agenda to be forwarded. ... As part of the profession, nurses possess significant influence to change the legislation particularly when proper healthcare has an organization, common choice on a problem. 4) Understanding Committees The committees can be the facilities of education and policy making. This comprise of state and federal levels. The proposed legislation is granted the extreme concern in the panel level. This is during situations when conflicting points of view are analyzed and hammering of the legislation is done. Nurses are going to affect the procedure at this juncture by asking a chance to give a testimony. 5) Communicating with Legislators Law makers at the federal and state levels go through thousands of expenses that encompass wide problems annually. Therefore, it is difficult for the lawmakers to be experienced on every problem and to know every bill. Writing a well-designed correspondence, providing e-mails, making a written summary of the problem with team, and pleasant the legislator to vi sit the office are all methods to get someone's law makers to consider one as an professional on healthcare proper care and to get in touch with when they need details appropriate to nursing and healthcare (Abood, 2007p.24). Increasing My Power to have an influence in votes The ability to efficiently have influence in the various places where the future health care policies are made, and to take advantage of possibilities to present nursingââ¬â¢s viewpoint on the healthcare problems is based upon having a power platform and knowing where and when to apply that effect (Aiken et al, 2010). Power is the ability to show some influence. Furthermore, power is a factor that is inevitable in human relationships, and those people such as nurses who

Charging of a 6-12V lead acid battery through the use of a solar panel Essay
Charging of a 6-12V lead acid battery through the use of a solar panel - Essay Example Currently, man used the fullest potential of the solar system that able the man to use it as the source of renewable energy research. The project that includes in this research used the solar power as the source of energy for the circuit. This study used a solar cell battery charger, which is an instrument that sum up all the energy in a rechargeable battery by driving an electric current on it. There are given two tasks that need to take note in commonly using lead-acid based battery charges. First, it is task to fully pay attention for the self-discharge, frequently faster as practical in order to have a consistency in its capacity. Second, it is tasked to restore capacity. For both tasks cases, ideal operation needs to exactly identify the voltage of the battery. The aim of this project is to formulate a circuit that through the use of photovoltaic cells as a main basis would charge a 6-12V lead acid based battery. Depending to the given technology and capacity of the battery that being charge will determine the charge current. In this case, it is preferable to use 6V and 12V batteries. For this project to be able to complete, it is recommended to choose a voltage regulator circuit that has the ability to constantly maintain a certain voltage level; It is also recommended to use a voltage circuit checker in order to trace the voltage in the given battery before charging. Project Aim The aim of this project is to formulate and improve a circuit that has the ability to charge a 6-12V lead acid based battery, through the use of a solar panel as the main source of energy that will be carried out on the circuit; that will be able to allocate a wide range of use. Statement of Objective 1. To improve a charging circuit that can charge a 6-12V lead acid based battery through these of photovoltaic panels as a DC source. 2. To know how battery charger works. 3. Tounderstand more the Solar panel energy. Introduction This section explains the global history of solar ener gy. It also conducts a literature review. There are figures that this review includes; full corresponding details are stated. Word History - Solar energy Figure 1 Solar Energy The sunââ¬â¢s radiant light and its heat are the main sources of solar energy. Earth's weather and climate are being controlled by solar energy, as it gives life to all living things in the earth. Solar energy is a word that is being indicated as solar power; furthermore, solar power also refers to electricity generated from solar radiation. Biomass and hydroelectricity are said accountable for most of the present movement of renewable energy on Earth. However, for example wave power and its wind, solar energy only establishes minor energy resources. Actually, solar energy technologies have the ability to supply electrical generation through heat engines or photovoltaic means. Passive solar buildings also bring safe water use as potable in drinking, hot water, daylight, and for thermal energy; this excludes geothermal energy that was carried out from the energy that comes from the sun. Solar radiation is mainly included in this industrial type of solar energy that is recommendable to use for practical ends. There are two characteristic of solar technology: active or inactive. The solar cell captures, disseminates and translates sunlight. There are also solar energy techniques in order to convert sunlight into functional outputs, such as pumps, photovoltaic
